Tech Hubs Program Overview
The Tech Hubs Program is designed to significantly enhance U.S. economic competitiveness and national security by investing in regions across the country that possess assets, resources, capacities, and potential for transforming into global leaders in innovative technology ecosystems over the next decade. This program brings together diverse public, private, and academic partners into collaborative consortia focused on driving inclusive regional growth and enabling businesses to start and scale while deploying and delivering critical and emerging technologies.
In October 2023, President Biden announced the selection of the inaugural cohort of 31 Tech Hubs alongside recipients for 29 Strategy Development Grants SDGs. This program supports regions with existing innovation assets as a foundation for developing strategies that will foster workforce development, support entrepreneurial growth, and promote technological advancements.
The Phase 2 Notice of Funding Opportunity NOFO offered $504 million to 12 Tech Hubs across the United States by February 29, 2024. In July 2024, EDA announced investments totaling $504 million for these hubs, as well as $9.5 million in Consortium Accelerator Awards for 19 designated Tech Hubs to further implement their strategies.
The Strategy Development Grant SDG initiative is med at enhancing local coordination and planning efforts by consortia to refine their technology-focused regional economic development strategies. Eleven of the 31 Designated Tech Hubs received SDGs, with an additional grant providing support for 18 other consortia in developing their plans towards potential future Designation.
The overarching goal of this program is to invest directly in U.S. regions that show promise as global leaders in specific technology sectors outlined within the CHIPS and Science Act. This $10 billion investment over five years, authorized by Congress through the FY 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act, catalyze job creation for American workers across skill levels while ensuring inclusive growth.
